Elastic: Friend or Foe?

Nice deficit huh? Pretty pitiful! How can I expect to achieve the goals I have set when I get results like that. Ugh...

Anyways, in case you missed it yesterday, I updated my progress pictures so you can check them out here. I know we are our own worst critics but I am not seeing much of a change. I do notice the difference in my face though.

I wanted to talk about elastic waistbands. Ever since I can remember I have had elastic waisted pants. Even as a young girl in grade school. All my classmates where wearing Dittos and Chemin de Fers (dang I am old) and I was wearing polyester pants with an elastic waist. Now during jr. high and high school I was able to get into "some" regular pants and wore 501s for awhile but for as long as I can remember it has been me and elastic.

Now weight loss experts will tell you that you shouldn't wear elastic because you are not aware of your expanding waist if it just keeps stretching to accommodate your girth but at my highest weight it was hard to find anything that fit let alone without elastic. I do agree with them but when you have limited options you work with what is available.

Last week, I bought a pair of Seven Jeans. They generally retail for about $70-$80 a pair which is way more then I would EVER pay for a pair of pants, let alone jeans but they were on sale for $15.99!! I bought them in a Size 22 but they do not quite fit but they will soon enough. This is my first pair of designer jeans and I am 43 years old! HOLY CRAPOLA! They are also one of the few pairs of pants that I own that do not have elastic. I look forward to the day that I don't "have" to have elastic waistbands. Hey, I may be able to sport a belt one of these days too. What a concept! Until next time...

  1. a. I remember chemin de fers and dittos
    b. I was able to buy REAL jeans for the first time in 19 years a couple years ago and I haven't looked back!
    c. I think having goal clothing is awesome after a swim coach made me buy the largest size lap swimming speedo I could get that was at the time 4 sizes too small one summer and darn it if I didnt get into it by the end of the summer!
and any deficit honey....is not a gain and THAT is awesome!

  2. What a great buy!

Keep working on it, and the deficit will come. Sometimes we have to follow midlife_swimmer's example and just be glad not to gain while we work things out.

  3. I remember Dittos! And 501's - those were hard to fit over my curvy thighs and butt, even when I was thin. But I had a pair - talk about extra bathroom time with those buttons!

I remember about a year ago vowing to wear my jeans all day long, instead of changing into my elastic-waist comfy pants when I was at home - they jeans definitely reminded me to watch what I was eating, as they were tight at the waist (and everywhere else!).

I have looked at Seven jeans but haven't had the courage to try them on - I think I'm afraid that they won't fit. Plus they are expensive - you found a DEAL!!!

  5. I'm so old they didn't even have girl Levi's back then - we bought the men's size to fit over our hips then had our moms take the waistband in. What a bargain you got on those Sevens - can't wait for the picture where you are wearing them!

  9. LOL, I *lived* in comfy cotton capris & yoga pants for the past few years. I did have jeans but I can remember feeling anxious when cold weather would come along...would the jeans still fit?

Now, I still love my comfy yoga pants for around the house. Mostly that is because I find myself working in 15 minute workouts throughout the day as I can & want to be comfortable & have the flexibility that jeans don't offer. Jeans though are the true measure...and I am *this* close to the next size. I bet you'll be in those new jeans in no time girl! (& what a bargain!!)

    Have a great week!

  10. So, I totally planned to come over here and get you back for the whole "you're old enough to be your lab partner's MOTHER" crack you made the other day, but what can I say. This is a pretty stinking cool NSV. Paybacks later.
You are on your way! I'll keep my eye out for a good deal on a belt!

  11. I have lived in polyester with elastic waistbands for most of my life! Back in the day you couldn't buy pants or anything else with a "normal" waistband. I couldn't even find jeans in my size in the small town I grew up in!

I know you'll be in those size 22 jeans in no time at all! Way to go!

  12. Hi Katie. I cheat with jeans and only buy ones made of stretchy material!

  13. You squeaked out a deficit and thats what matters. I'm with you on the elastic part. I like them, but its hard to gauge your weightloss/gain with them.

  14. You'll get there. Be patient. I know, it's a hard concept. Hard for me, too. I am not a patient gal. But these things come in their time. Our bodies work in their own ways, in their own time. That's why you should never compare yourself to anyone but yourself.

Wooot! On the designer jeans. I gave up elastic after losing the weight. But prior to that, it was my friend, too. Now I only wear it on sweat pants.

  15. This post makes me smile! Even your title is great. Congrats on the new jeans - you have to post a picture when you get those suckers on!

And I'm so old I don't even recognize those brand names you listed - I was a Villager and Lady Bug girl. Oh - and Gator skirts. You, my dear KJ, are a baby. I could be your much older sister!!!

  17. Wait a minute, I've never heard of Dittos or the other kind of pants-I must be really old!

The new jeans are just the start. Pretty soon you will be kissing the elastic good riddance forever!

  18. What a great deal on those jeans! I've never liked elastic because it gives me a stomach ache from pulling in on my stomach. I think you'll find you like regular pants much better. GREAT JOB!

  19. Congrats on the jeans! AND for having a deficit today when it could easily have been a surplus... :o)

  20. I can't wait to get to that place too. I don't wear elastic jeans, but ALWAYS the stretchy ones.

  21. Dittos and Chemin de Furs! OMG!! That made me laugh, memory lane - although I could never fit into the junior sizes - my skinny friends wore them all the time. Congrats on the new jeans! You will be in them in no time. Have fun in Gilroy tomorrow.
