Chocolate Sprinkles & Stuff

Happy Friday everybody! I can’t tell you how happy I am that it’s Friday AND it’s a 3 day weekend. Can’t beat that right? Nothing too exciting planned for the weekend except organizing our storage unit and getting in some exercise. It will be raining most of the weekend so maybe a movie will be added to the agenda.

I really enjoyed the play last night! So cute and who doesn’t like the story of Beauty and the Beast? I brought Nikki a single long stem rose and she loved it. I wanted to give her a pink one but they were all out. Only white and red after Valentine's day - grrrrrr.  As for dinner, I pretty much failed. I brought a cereal bar and string cheese with me and ate those early on. When we were done (8:00 p.m.) we went to Taco Bell and I had a chicken burrito.  Note to self: Need better planning next time. Needs to be healthy and sustainable.  I logged everything in my bugg and uploaded the data this morning. This is my new routine. If I forget, I can bring my Netbook with me and upload it at work or wherever I am.

As for the weigh in, I am up 3 lbs. from my last weigh in a few weeks ago. Loose portion control and lack of activity the last couple of weeks has added up. So dusting myself off, straightening up my act and I am on my way again. I will tell you though that that is the difference between now and my previous attempts at losing weight. Something like this would throw me into a box of brownies before but not anymore!

Now for the fun part of this post!!! One of my colleagues introduced me to a sweet young lady named Rachel from Thread Muse.  She makes lovely crocheted scarves. She sells them on Etsy which is a great place to shop for handmade items! She has provided this lovely scarf called "Chocolate Sprinkles" for me to Giveaway to one of my readers. All you need to do to enter the giveaway is to tell me in the what your favorite accessory is. I will announce the winner next Tuesday, February 22nd. If you are not the winner and interested in purchasing a scarf Rachel has authorized a 10% discount. Just use katiej for the coupon code when checking out. She also authorized Free shipping for US residents as well. Thanks Rachel!

Hope you have a great weekend! Until next time...

Dancing and Drama

Had a good night last night. Dave made Chicken enchiladas from leftover chicken. The meal was mere pennies because I got the chicken from Costco. We had a Salsa salad to go with it. Super yummy! After dinner I decided to pop in the Just Dance 2 Wii game to check it out. You can set up programs to follow and I chose the "easy" one since I am a beginner.  It definitely gets your heart rate going and it was fun. On the first song, I was able to follow along pretty closely (It's Raining Men) but then the next song (Tik Tok) was harder but I still did okay. It looks like it is going to be a lot of fun especially when we can compete against each other. I will give you a more formal review when I have delved into it a little deeper.

Tonight, I am going to see a production of Beauty and the Beast. Nikki (neighbor) is in the play and I am looking forward to seeing it.  It is right after work so I will just go directly there and meet up with her folks. Not sure how I will fit dinner in. Might need to pack a snack to keep my blood sugar stable. Speaking of, I am due to get blood work done so I am going to go tomorrow morning at o'dark hundred.  The results are usually posted online within 24 hours so I am anxious to see the new numbers.

I am going to weigh come hell or high water tomorrow and I also will be announcing another Giveaway! I am excited as I am getting the items today!

P.S. I have my bodybugg on and will upload it tonight before bed <---- new routine

Steamer Love!

The winner of my Blogiversary Giveaway is 135 by 2012! Thank you ALL for the wonderful comments on my Blogiversary post. You guys really know how to make a girl feel loved! I have another giveaway in the works so stay tuned for that.
This one is on sale at Walgreen's for $9.99!
Have I ever told you that I BIG puffy heart my Rice Cooker/Steamer?  Years ago, I purchased a rice cooker for cooking rice. I never even thought of using it as a steamer even though it came with a steaming rack and instructions.  It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I started exploring the options of steaming and I was SOLD instantly. It is so easy and so much better then boiling or microwaving. All you do is add about an inch of water on the bottom of the steamer, add you veggies then click the "Cook" button and it will cook it and then it will switch to "Warm" when it is done. Well yesterday, I was reading someones blog post about preparing Steel Cut Oatmeal and that they prepped the night before and turned them on in the morning when they got up. I decided to try it so before I went to bed I put in the one cup of oats and two cups of water. When I got up this morning, I turned it on before hopping in the shower and within 10-15 mins. I had yummy, steaming hot oatmeal! I added some Truvia and fresh strawberries and I was good to go. I brought it with me to work and ate it when I got to my desk.  It was so easy and super yummy AND filling!  The next thing I want to try with it is dried cranberries and raisins. So many options!

I have been bad about wearing my bugg lately. I usually upload my bugg data at work but they upgraded the software recently and now I need to download it to my PC but need help from MIS. I was friends with all the previous people in that position (I have been here 7 years) but there is a new contractor and I am not feeling any warm fuzzies from him. I haven't mentioned it yet but in the meantime, I have my Netbook so I can update data on that. It is just a matter of logistics. I need to work on being less resistant to changes for sure. Until next time...

Tuesday Tidbits

I hope you had a good Valentine's day. Mine turned out quite nicely.  Dave got me a charm for my Pandora Bracelet that is sterling with a fresh water pearl. He also got me some red Gerbera Daises and a great card that made me cry. Seriously mushy card  - 'nuff said.

Here is my bracelet Shelley. In order from left to right are moon and stars, heart, lots of hearts, new charm, ladybug, purse and flower with pink CZ.

Dave made me dinner as well. We had whole wheat pasta rotini with homemade sauce, salad and garlic bread. I am a weirdo and I don't like angel hair or vermicelli but all of the other shapes are okay. We had vitamuffins for dessert. I found them at Target grocery but they were $4.19 for 4 which seems kinda spendy. I will do a price comparison vs. ordering them online.

I was poking around blogs the other day and came across WomanFreebies.com. They have a daily email that comes out with discounts and free samples.  I also discovered Groupon.com that offers daily specials for vendors in your neighborhood. Check them out when you have a chance.

Tonight, Dave has a meeting so I will be on my own. He is going to cook dinner for us though before he take off. I think I will try the Just Dance DVD and see how it is. I also want to go to the library and check out a Hula DVD. I loved doing Hula 20+ years ago and thought it would be cool to check it out again. Until next time...

P.S. You still have time to enter the Giveaway!

Projects & Parties

How was your weekend? Good I hope. I was in project mode! I hung some cork board to help create my "mediation station"  Here are the boards by themselves

Here they are with items on them. I plan on filling the top right one with pictures that correspond to my dream board and the bottom one I will just pin notes and memos as needed.
This is on the wall by my kitchen table. I wanted to write notes to Dave and reminders for myself.

I recently got this framed picture so we hung it up. It is a picture of the Lone Cypress at Pebble Beach, Monterey, CA.

I put it here next the photograph of the Venetian Hotel in Capitola, CA. Capitola is my happy place.

This is a candle holder that I just love, it holds tea light candles in the shells. I tried to capture the picture with the candles lit but it did not work.

Dave has been wanting to frame some family pictures but waited until I could help him.  We had to do some enlarging etc. but the pictures turned out nicely. Doesn't that Febreeze flameless luminary look like a real candle? I swear there are STILL times I want to actually blow it out and I have had it for months. LOL!

I made these cookies with Nikki and Helen. They warn you right on the package in big letters "Do Not Eat Raw Cookie Dough" I was very tempted to do it though even though "they" warned me not to. How warped is that???

I brought a plate of them to work today. I did end up having three of them last night. I miss baking but know it is a trigger for overindulging for me. People at work loved them though :-D

My neighbor's son, Joey, is turning 13 this coming weekend and his parent's bought him Kinect. Oh-Emm-Geee it is fun fun fun! His folks bought him Dance Central for it and we played. Guess who is the champion of the day? ME!!! I did Lady Gaga's Poker Face. It was soooo fun and it really was a good workout. I bought the Just Dance 2 game but did not have a chance to play it.  It was on sale at Game Stop for $29.99 which was $10 off so I got it. I am anxious to try it and will definitely give you a review.

Dave is cooking me dinner tonight and is bringing me a surprise today so that will be nice.  My mom says Valentine's Day is just for lovers but I got her a card and little garden decor stone with a cardinal on it. I am sure she will dig it. I am going to go by her house at lunchtime and give it to her. Until next time...

P.S. If you haven't seen my blogiversary post you can check it out here. You still have time to enter the giveaway!

2 Year Blogiversary & Giveaway!!!

Happy Blogiversary to me!

Back Then...

When I first started this journey I weighed 315 lbs. I did not really have much quality of life. I was taking 7 different medications for various ailments including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, acid reflux and Type II Diabetes. I also was doing insulin twice a day and sleeping with a CPAP machine. My doctor had suggested WLS but I was very hesitant because of the risks associated with surgery. I told her that I would try to lose weight on my own and would do the surgery if I was unsuccessful. I was at my breaking point and knew I just HAD to do something or I was going to die. Literally. D-i-e. Everybody has a different bottom and that was mine. I had to make some lifestyle changes QUICK or ELSE! I was desperate and depressed. I had a pretty grim outlook on life.

First Year

I had to make a plan. I had to do something that would be sustainable for the long haul so I tracked the calories I was consuming and the exercise I was getting through my bodybugg.  I adjusted my portion sizes and aimed for more fresh fruits, whole grains and fresh vegetables.  I had a very warped idea of what an actual portion was. I managed to lose 60 lbs. the first year of my journey. I started walking, riding my bike and doing belly dancing and Zumba. I wanted it be fun! I maintained the 60 lb. loss but did replace 15 lbs. of fat with muscle.  To be honest, I did think the weight would come off much quicker but you get out of it what you put into right? Exercise is where I falter. I have not been consistent about it and would probably have lost more had I been but I won't make excuses. I will tell you that now at 250 it is a WHOLE lot easier moving around then it was at 315. I am making an effort to incorporate it into my daily life now and I am doing better but there is still a whole lot of improvement needed here.

Second Year

Last year was a whirlwind on the emotional front for sure.  I found out in July that I have biological siblings that I never knew existed and that my biological mother was deceased from an overdose. My niece Candace and I met 8 days later as she is the one who lives closest to me. Dave and I moved out of a chaotic living situation shortly thereafter to a quiet complex and I got to go on my second Alaskan Cruise with my mom. I managed not to gain any weight on the cruise this time either! :-D I met my biological Uncle Steve in August, met Tess and Michael my siblings in September and then found my biological father in October .We met once and communicated by phone and I sent him cards and a picture of me and but he died the day after Christmas due to complications from catching on fire while smoking. He will be interned on Feb. 23rd.  The entire year I maintained the 60 lb. loss and bounced up and down with the same 5 lbs. As much as that stinks, it also taught me that I could choose constructive ways of coping with my emotions other then food. I did a whole lot of deep soul searching and feel like I have come to terms with a lot of the emotional sources of my morbid obesity. It's all about progress not perfection right? It was a life changing year.

Today

I am feeling that I am on my way again even though I had the flu and then kidney stones over the last 5 weeks LOL! I really do feel like this really is my time to shine!  I am a third of the way to my goal.  I have lost 19% of my body weight and I have lost 29" as of today. I have reduced my insulin dosage by 80%. I am only taking one of the BP medications and hope to be off that by the end of this year. My doctor is very pleased with my current stats and looks forward to seeing my continued progress. I still have have a lot of weight to lose but I you can rest assured that I am going to reach my goals

My goals for this year are :
  • Go to BlogHer in San Diego on Aug. 5-6
  • To reach 100 lbs. loss by BlogHer
  • Zipline and hang out with my long time friend Kari
  • Turn 45 <--- Moi?
  • Get to Onderland by the end of the year (or sooner!)
  • Get to Goal of 150 lbs. lost
I do want to take this opportunity to THANK YOU for all your support and encouragement over the last 2 years.  I really don't believe that I would have gotten this far had it not been for my blog and for you all rooting me on or calling me on my crap as needed. Special thanks to Shelley and Helen for sticking by me even when I wanted to throw in the proverbial towel. You ladies are my heroes and I feel I am a better person for knowing you both!

Blogiversary Eve

Had a decent day with food yesterday. I got a little snacky in the evening with crackers and therefore have a lower deficit then normal but every day with a deficit is a good day in my book.

I recently got this CD from a Starbuck's Giftcard that I had and it was a lovely way to wake up this morning. I have always loved John Legend and this CD does not dissappoint.  I have an alarm clock that plays CDs, radio or MP3s. It just put a smile on my face to wake up with that playing today :-)  I was wondering do you watch the videos or vlogs that people post? For me, it depends where I am reading the post. If I am at work, then I mark them for review later but if I'm home I watch them.

Do you have trouble swallowing vitamins or large pills? I do and have been searching for vitamins that I could palate and I found these.

They were a little more expensive then the other supplements but if I can be consistent with them then I think they are worth it. They are a little chewy but they soften up.
I just bought a box of Truvia yesterday for the first time. I am a Splenda user but was also intrigued by Truvia since it is natural vs. the chemicals in the other artificial sweeteners. I used it in my coffee this morning and I did notice there was no aftertaste at all. I am going to continue using it and I will let you know what I think.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I have been working on my 2 Year Blogiversary post. It sure has been eye opening to reflect back on 2010. It was a year that will go in the history books for sure! I am also planning on doing a Giveaway to celebrate so please stay tuned for that. Until next time...

Random Ramblings

How are you all doing today? I am doing pretty good. I thought it was Thursday when I woke up this morning. Does that ever happen to you? A bit disorienting to say the least. My weigh in will be on Friday no matter what. I think I may be up a few pounds but will lock it in regardless.

White at Night
I was doing some organizing and purging last night and I walked around the building and saw this beautiful flower that had bloomed. It is a white camellia. Usually they come in pink so it was cool to see it with white blooms. They are known to bloom in late winter/early spring. I have added this photo to my Walk-It 52 page as well.
Speaking of flowers... Over the weekend I went to a garage sale and got myself this sparkly vase for $1 and then bought some carnations at Costco to put in it. I love having flowers in the house and don't necessarily want to wait for someone to buy them for me. Our local farmer's market has some of the best flowers ever!

This is a picture of my dream wedding location as if I will ever get married! It is the Chapel on the grounds of the Grand Wailea hotel in Maui, Hawaii. My friend Sonny is there on business this week and he took this picture for me since he knows I love it.  Pictures just don't do it real justice. Each wall contains an elaborate stained glass window. It is stunning to see with the sun shining through.  Simply amazing! The price for a room there is $369 per night. I have only visited the property but never stayed there. My folks stayed there in the past though and took me there to show me how spectacular it is!

Is it just me or are people getting more reckless with their driving. Seems like now more then ever I am seeing people texting and talking on their phones and speeding while doing so. In fact, just this morning I was going down a residential street on my way to work (7:35 a.m) and it is 25 miles per hour. This woman was on my arse until I lightly tapped the brakes and then she was all sorts of angry with me. All I did was flash a two then a five with my hand and then waved. She was flipping me off and all. Good morning to you too you biotch! LOL!

Resuming "Normal"

Did well with food yesterday and was able to achieve a decent deficit. I am feeling a lot better then I have in the last two weeks. Looks like my "plumbing" problems have subsided. Speaking of plumbing, I feel like I have been in the ladies room at least 10x a day now with all the water I am drinking.  I work at the front desk in my office and have someone cover me whilst I use the loo and I am very self-conscious of how many times I have to ask someone to cover the phones for me.  I think subliminally, I avoided drinking water so I wouldn't have to ask so many times but I am over that now. I am not going to compromise my health anymore because I don't want to impose.

I am not sure if I mentioned it or not but our office is moving. The company I work for has leased offices for the last 45+ years and they are now building a customized building just for our office. It is further away from home then our current location BUT it is only 1.25 miles from my gym! Can't get much closer then that. I had considered reducing my gym membership to just the Sport locations but the Crane Court location is a Super Sport and I think well worth it if I use it regularly. What I need to do is a "dry run" from my apt. to the new office location and then to the gym. Do you ever do that? It reduces the anxiety for me if I am driving somewhere new. Obviously, I can only do it to shorter destinations but it makes me feel better. Well I hope you have a wonderful day! Until next time...

Monday Mucky Muck

It's Monday again! How did that happen so fast? Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I had a really nice one. Not as active as I would have liked but nice nonetheless. Saturday, I got to hang out with Danielle and we went to Costco to pick up last minute items for their Super Bowl party.  It was a freakin madhouse as you can imagine but I managed to navigate pretty well without steam rolling anyone (not that I did not want to!!)

My cool find was this insulated shopping bag that keeps food hot AND cold. It has a 12 Gallon capacity so it has lots of room to put stuff.  The one I got has pink and white flowers (go figure!) We also stopped at a garage sale and I got a few Valentine items, a red sparkly vase and a planter that I am going to put a cyclamen in. This is a cyclamen...
Sunday was a good day. I went to brunch with my mom and got some stuff done at her house. I went down to the bar about 3:30 p.m. I ate a plate of food that was 80% veggies but I could not resist the baked goodies so I had my fair share of brownie bites. I had 3.5 beers and they tasted great too. I was in bed by 8:00 p.m. but I feel good this morning. Today I am armed with my bugg and back to business. I did not go crazy but it is a long time since I have inbibed in treats like that.

The winners for the Bio Oil samples are Darla and Chabby Chic Mom. Ladies, please email me at katiejisonherway@gmail.com with your addresses. I am putting together my 2 Year Anniversary Post and it has been reflective but fun. I do have some giveaway items planned as well. Helen, I promise you I will get your package mailed this week come hell or high water! Man, I can be the world's biggest procrastinator! Until next time...

Patty Griffin - Rain

"Rain"

It's hard to listen to a hard hard heart
Beating close to mine
Pounding up against the stone and steel
Walls that I won't climb
Sometimes a hurt is so deep deep deep
You think that you're gonna drown
Sometimes all I can do is weep weep weep
With all this rain falling down

Strange how hard it rains now
Rows and rows of big dark clouds
When I'm holding on underneath this shroud
Rain

Its hard to know when to give up the fight
Two things you want will just never be right
Its never rained like it has to night before
Now I don't wanna beg you baby
For something maybe you could never give
I'm not looking for the rest of your life
I just want another chance to live

Strange how hard it rains now
Rows and rows of big dark clouds
When I'm holding on underneath this shroud
Rain

Strange how hard it rains now
Rows and rows of big dark clouds
When I'm holding on underneath this shroud
Rain

Strange how hard it rains now
Rows and rows of big dark clouds
When I'm still alive underneath this shroud
Rain Rain Rain

What Your Dental Health Says About You

We are all striving to make changes in our health but one area that may get ignored is your oral health. This article I found on WebMD has some great information about oral health so I wanted to share it with you. (This was originally posted on 3/7/10)

*********************************************

It's easy to ignore the effects of poor oral hygiene because they're hidden in your mouth. But gum disease produces a bleeding, infected wound that's the equivalent in size to the palms of both your hands, says Susan Karabin, DDS, a New York periodontist and president of the American Academy of Periodontology.

"If you had an infection that size on your thigh, you'd be hospitalized," Karabin says. "Yet people walk around with this infection in their mouth and ignore it. It's easy to ignore because it doesn't hurt ... but it's a serious infection, and if it were in a more visible place, it would be taken more seriously."

You may think that the worst consequence of poor dental health would be lost teeth and painful times in the dentist's chair. But some studies have linked common oral problems to illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, premature birth, osteoporosis, and even Alzheimer's disease. In most cases, the strength and exact nature of the link is unclear, but they suggest that dental health is important for preserving overall health.

"We need to educate the public that the mouth isn't disconnected to the rest of the body," says Sally Cram, DDS, a periodontist in Washington, D.C., and spokeswoman for the American Dental Association.

How Gum Disease Spreads
Periodontal disease is an infection caused by unhealthy bacteria that lodge between the teeth and gums. Simply brushing your teeth is enough to put some of those bacteria into your bloodstream, says Robert J. Genco, DDS, PhD, an oral biologist at the University of Buffalo. The bacteria then travel to major organs where they can spur new infections.

Inflammation also plays a role in spreading the effects of bad oral health. Red and swollen gums signal the body's inflammatory response to periodontal bacteria. "If you have inflammation in your mouth, certain chemicals are produced in response that can spread [through the bloodstream] and wreak havoc elsewhere in the body," Cram says. Evidence is mounting of the importance of the "mouth-body connection," as it is known, as dental problems are being linked to a growing list of other ailments

Oral Health and Diabetes Karabin has diagnosed several cases of diabetes from her dentist's chair. "When I see a patient with multiple abscesses in their mouth ... I immediately think 'diabetes.' I will send that patient for a glucose tolerance test." Nearly one-third of people with diabetes are unaware that they have it, and dentists can play a big role in diagnosing these patients, Genco says.
Diabetes and gum disease can interact in a vicious circle. Infections of any kind, including gum disease, cause the body to produce proteins called cytokines, which increase insulin resistance and make blood sugar more difficult to control, Karabin says. Conversely, uncontrolled diabetes impairs the body's healing mechanism, which makes it harder to control gum disease, Cram says.

Diabetic patients who avoid dentists out of fear or anxiety will have problems that go beyond tooth loss, says John Buse, MD, PhD, director of the Diabetes Care Center at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. "You probably won't be able to do a good job taking care of diabetes unless you go to a dentist."

Gum disease may also speed the progression to full-blown diabetes in the 54 million Americans who are classified as prediabetic. According to the American Diabetes Association, many people first become aware they have diabetes when they develop dental disease.

In a 2007 study, Danish researchers compared prediabetic rats with gum disease to prediabetic rats without gum disease. The rats with gum disease soon displayed increased insulin resistance and other signs of progression toward type 2 diabetes.

Oral Health and Heart Disease People with periodontal disease are nearly twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without, according to the American Academy of Periodontology. One theory is that oral bacteria attach to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries and contribute to the clots that can lead to heart attacks. Another is that inflammation increases plaque buildup.
Although evidence has been mixed, more than 20 "good-sized" studies have demonstrated the relationship between gum disease and heart disease, Genco says. But that relationship is still not confirmed as with other known risk factors such as smoking or obesity. Genco is planning a major study to see whether treating gum disease can forestall a second heart attack in people who have already had one.

Recent analysis suggests that common oral problems could increase the risk of cardiac problems. Indra Mustapha, DDS, a periodontist who teaches at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and colleagues analyzed the results of other research studies and found that periodontal disease with signs of bacterial exposure was associated with greater risk of heart disease.

The American Heart Association states, "At this time, promoting dental treatment expressly to prevent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and/or acute cardiovascular events is not recommended."

Oral Health and Premature Birth
"Ob-gyns always knew that preterm and low-birth-weight births could be triggered by infections in the body," says Karabin. "They looked for urinary tract infections and throat infections, but never really thought about the mouth until a periodontic researcher looked into it."

Karabin says that severe periodontal disease in the mother may lead to an increase in the risk of premature birth. Remember those cytokines? Turns out they also increase the level of the hormone prostaglandin, which triggers labor, says Karabin. Fortunately, studies show that early treatment of gum disease and improved oral hygiene in women can reduce their risk of premature birth.

Other conditions that indicate a link between dental health and overall health include:

Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis and tooth loss often go hand in hand because the same decrease in mineral density that boosts the risk of hip and other fractures affects the jawbone and teeth. Measures taken to prevent or treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women are likely to also help prevent severe gum disease, Genco says.

Rheumatoid arthritis. A study released in June 2008 found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were nearly eight times more likely to have periodontal disease. RA, like periodontal disease, is an inflammatory disorder, which may help explain the link, Karabin says.

Alzheimer's disease. A 2005 study of identical twins showed that in twin pairs where one had dementia and the other didn't, the ones with dementia were four times more likely to have gum disease by midlife. The study doesn't say that good oral heath prevents Alzheimer's, but that inflammation early in life can have severe consequences later.

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body
With the mouth and body so closely linked, dentists and physicians should collaborate more closely, Karabin says. "Physicians need to be trained to examine the mouth, and dentists need to understand more about systemic disease so they can pick up on some of the cues."

The findings also serve to bring home the importance of oral hygiene. Brush twice a day with a toothbrush with soft or medium bristles, Genco says. Clean between your teeth daily with floss, or try some of the interdental picks available at drugstores. If your gums bleed with flossing and don't stop after three to four days, see your dentist. In most cases, gum disease isn't painful. So even if you're feeling fine, visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams. You may find out more than you ever expected. "Today, more dentists aren't just looking at teeth and gums," says Cram. "They're giving you a good medical exam."

No Weigh Man!

Happy Friday! I am so glad that its Friday - even more so then usual. I would just like to get some rest and relaxation in without being in too much pain. Speaking of pain, I am taking Tylenol Codeine and it is mucking up my plumbing so I decided that there is no way I am going to get on the scale right now. I have peeked but dismissed it because I don't think it is "real" weight. Regardless, it just ain't happenin...

I forgot to mention that last weekend, I went to Big 5 Sporting Goods because I was looking for some Kettlebells and I found this medicine ball. It is 8 lbs. I am looking forward to using it with my balance ball.

The other thing I got was a bike rack for my car. I have ALWAYS wanted one!!!  I want to take my bike Phoebe over the hill to Santa Cruz since she is a Beach Cruiser.  I also want to go up to Lexington Reservoir and ride around the trails up there. I have never been able to go mobile with my bike and and I am super excited to be able to do it now. It only hold two bikes but I thought that was fine since it will primarily be just mine but I could bring a friend and put theirs on there too. As I am writing this post, I am thinking, who is this woman and why is she excited about exercising. I would never have thought that would be me but apparently I have changed.

Here is the 5 Day Forecast for our area, please don't hate. I am excited that it will be so nice and looking forward to getting outside and enjoying it. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Until next time...

P.S. You can still enter the Bio-Oil Giveaway here. I will announce the winners Monday :-D

Katie J's doing a Giveaway!

Thank you so much for the positive and healing thoughts. I am doing a lot better. I think the stones have passed for the most part.  I am at work today so that is a good sign although I do have my pain pills too. I had some Instant Breakfast already and drinking tea and water. I have not had coffee all week. :-( I drink tea when my belly is funky. If I don't have any caffeine my head will cave in. LOL!

So here is a look at my hair. I am eternally trying to take decent self portraits. You would think I would have no trouble since I have the iPhone that has the reversible camera but alas, I am unable to do a decent one. This one made the cut though. My friend said on Facebook: "You look a lil girl going to Disneyland and you just cant believe it ;-) Of course all I see is the deep wrinkles on my forehead...

About 4 months ago, I was in Walgreen's and saw this product called Bio-Oil. It was with the moisturizers and lotions. Bio-Oil® is a specialist skincare product that helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and uneven skin tone. Its advanced formulation, which contains the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™, also makes it highly effective for numerous other skin concerns, including aging skin and dehydrated skin.

Being that I have skin issues like eczema and NLD, I figured it would be worth a try. They had 2 sizes available. One was $10 and the other was $20. I picked the $10 since I was not sure how effective it was. Well, I was pleasantly surprised!! I actually gave the $10 bottle to Danielle for a scar she is trying to fade and bought the larger bottle. She shared her's with another friend whose baby had heart surgery and it is fading the babies scar too.  I LOVE BIO-OIL! This stuff is amazing! I have been using it it on my face for the uneven skin tone, on my arms to fade the eczema scars, my belly for the stretch marks and on my legs for the NLD and I have noticed an improvement on all of the above! Even on my uncurable, product resistant NLD, it has made a difference! I do plan on writing a testimonial for them because I believe that strongly about their product. I wrote the company and told them how much I love their product and asked if they would send me some sample bottles and they responded right away!

I will be giving two winners a 2 oz. sample bottle of Bio-Oil. All you have to do is tell me in the comments what beauty product you just can't live without?  You can get additional entries for posting the giveaway on Facebook or Twitter. This giveaway is open to EVERYONE so even you lovely International readers are welcome to enter. There is also a $2 off coupon on their website in case you don't win and you are interested in getting some. I will announce the winners on Monday, February 7th.  Until next time...

Monday Madness

How was your weekend? Mine started out great but took a major nose dive on Sunday.  Saturday was a great day. I got my hair colored and a pedicure from Victoria Beauty which is down the street from where I live. I have been seeing her for about 8 years now. I went with a darker color then usual and I like it (5G). I will show you a picture tomorrow. While she was painting my toes, I happened to comment on the pendant she had on. It is a little purse pendant and it's pink on the other side. I told her I thought it was adorable and she gave it to me! I resisted at first but then I gave in. I totally love it!  Isnt it cute?

Purse Pendant

After I was done at Victoria's, I drove to downtown Los Gatos to get my hair cut. When I arrived, my gal was not there and Cory, one of the other stylists was able to take me in. I was a little miffed but I really liked her personality so I may have a new hairdresser. Unfortunately Katie, my ususal gal, bailed out on me. She has flaked on me before so I am not sure if I will go back to her or not. I have some time to think about it.

So I got up Sunday morning and started working on my DreamBoard. I put on some New Age music and was really enjoying myself. I would recommend it to anyone!  By 11:00 a.m. I was doubled over in pain and spent the remainder of the day in the bathroom vomiting etc. How ironic that I posted the Scoop on Poop yesterday.  The next step with the Dreamboard is going to be print pictures. I have been trolling for some over the last two weeks so I should be good to go. I will most likely finish it this weekend and get it hung up in the bedroom.

The wonder product that I mentioned, arrived on Friday so I will be doing a Giveaway on that starting tomorrw.  So happy to be able to share that with you! It is great stuff. Stay tuned for that. Until next time...

The Scoop on Poop

WebMD helps you answer the most common and sometimes sensitive questions about bowel movements.
WebMD Feature

We have a lot of silly names for it: BMs, caca, doo-doo, turds, and of course, poop. We don't generally discuss it in our daily conversations. But asking some important questions about your bowel movements might give you some insight into your gastrointestinal health. Here's the scoop on poop.

ABCs of Poop

Bowel movements are the end result of your body taking the nutrients it needs from the food you eat and eliminating what's left.  "Bowel movements are important for your health because they are the body’s natural way of excreting waste from the body,” says Eric Esrailian, MD, section head in general gastroenterology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. When it comes to frequency, color, shape, and size, a general rule of thumb is that normal bowel movements are defined as what’s comfortable for you. But being knowledgeable about your digestive process can help you identify when normal goes awry.

Frequency: “There is no normal when it comes to frequency of bowel movements, only averages” says Bernard Aserkoff, MD, a physician in the GI Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. It’s average to go once or twice a day, he says, but many people go more, and some go less -- maybe every other day, and or as infrequently as once or twice a week.  As long as you feel comfortable, you don’t need to give your BMs much thought.

Color: “Bowel movements are generally brown in color because of bile, which is produced in the liver and important to the digestion process,” Aserkoff tells WebMD. The food you eat typically takes three days from the time you eat it until it finishes its journey in your toilet, Aserkoff says. If it takes a shorter time, the result may be greener stool because green is one of the first colors in the rainbow of the digestive process.  Color can be a red flag when it’s a drastic change, Aserkoff says. “If stool is black, it can mean that you are bleeding internally, possibly as a result of an ulcer or cancer,” he says. Stool that is light in color -- like grey clay -- can also mean trouble if it’s a change from what you normally see. Although it doesn’t happen often, very light-colored stool can be reflective of liver disease.

Size and shape: “We used to believe that size was indicative of a problem if the stool was ‘pencil-thin,’” Aserkoff says. “But recent research indicates that this is actually not true.” Size and shape are irrelevant, Aserkoff says, if what’s coming out is normal for you.

Odor: Bowel movements usually smell. But is it normal if your trips to the bathroom mean that the rest of the family has to avoid that part of the house for an hour or two? The answer is yes. It’s normal, and probably a good sign that your gut is abundant with bacteria that is working hard to keep you healthy. Your intestines are swarming with trillions upon trillions of bacteria that enhance digestive and metabolic processes. They are also the reason why poop smells -- a direct result of the bacterial activity in your GI tract. So although it's no bed of roses, it is normal for your bowel movements to stink.

Poop Problems

So what happens when your poop process gets out of whack? The first sign that your intestines aren’t up to par is a shift from your normal GI routine, and as a result, discomfort below the waist.

Constipation and Diarrhea
Constipation is a concern when you normally have a bowel movement once or twice a day, and that changes -- maybe you haven’t gone in three days, or more.  However long it’s been, you now feel gassy, bloated, and generally uncomfortable. When you try to go, you have to push and strain, and what comes out is a whole lot of nothin’.Constipation can have many causes. It might be that you’ve had a shift in your diet, such as a drop in fiber intake, or maybe because you’re not drinking enough water each day, or because your physical activity level has decreased, slowing your metabolic processes down, including digestion. Certain medications (such as narcotic pain medicines and iron supplements) can also cause constipation problems. Although constipation causes one set of problems, diarrhea can also mean digestive disaster. Whether it’s caused by a meal that just didn’t sit right, or a harmful bacterium or virus, it's categorized by loose stool, and another hallmark of GI trouble -- discomfort. “Diarrhea can be caused by any number of factors,” Aserkoff says. “But the problem with diarrhea, in addition to the obvious, is that it can cause other health problems, like dehydration, if you’re living with it for more than two or three days.” Generally, you recoup from a bout of diarrhea or constipation in a day or two, Aserkoff says. If not, it’s probably worth a trip to the doctor for further GI troubleshooting.

Blood in the Stool
“One of the most significant warning signs when it comes to bowel movements is blood in the stool,” Esrailian says. Blood in your stool could be a symptom of something as significant as cancer and warrants a call to your doctor right away -- even if you think it could be hemorrhoids, or tiny tears in the anal tissue, as a result of constipation and straining, he says. If you’re over 50, or if you have a family history of colorectal cancer, a colonoscopy is probably in order. Other warning signs to watch for when your bowel movements have taken a turn for the worse are fever, abdominal pain, or dehydration -- any one of which could be tied to GI trouble, such as a virus, appendicitis, or food poisoning.

Good GI Health

Tricks to keeping your poop on track are simple ones: a healthy diet high in fiber, lots of water, and regular exercise. “Generally, 20-25 grams of dietary fiber per day is recommended, and for many people, you get this much in a healthy diet,” Esrailian says. “If you are having infrequent bowel movements and are experiencing discomfort, then the first easy way to correct it is to increase dietary fiber through food, supplement, or both.”
High-fiber powerhouse foods are whole-grain cereals and breads, fresh vegetables and fruit, and nuts. Usually, a day or two of a fiber-focused diet will put your trips to the bathroom back on track. Proper hydration is also key for your colon, ensuring you have enough fluid in your body to move stool through the digestive track and out the other end on a regular basis, Esrailian says.Exercise is also beneficial for your bowels. It helps improve GI “motility,” he says, and can often alleviate constipation by improving your metabolic and digestive processes. Overall, normal is a pretty easy mark to make when it comes to your bowel movements, both experts say, and aside from the warning signs they offered, what goes in one end usually comes out the other with minimal problems along the way.

We've Got A Winner!

We've got a winner! Thanks to everyone who entered the giveaway, the winner is Fat Angry Blog. I have emailed her with all the particulars. If you have not visited FAB, you should go check it out!  I recently contacted a company about their product that I love and told them about my blog and that I would love to give away some of their product and they are sending me some so I will get them shortly. Stay tuned to see what it is! This is one of the best products I have EVER used!

I am really glad that it's Friday! I have run the gamut of emotions this week. Dave chose to pick a fight with me this morning and I am literally at my wits end with him. It will be a big adjustment but honestly I think I am better living without him at this point. One of my reasons for hanging in there this long was that he really does not have anywhere to go and I did not want to put someone in that situation but I am at a point that I feel it is on him to deal with it. I have done everything in my power to help (insert enable) him and I am just tapped dry. I know I have said this before... probably sound like a broken record... maybe he is mad enough that he will leave on his own...

I did not plan on this post being so somber, really! I have/had some great plans for the weekend...  I am getting a pedicure and my hair colored in the morning. Going a little darker :-D I have Raspberry Sorbet polish and some little flowers to add for a little pizazz. I am going to get my hair cut in the afternoon in Downtown LG.  I was planning on going to the beach but not sure if I will go now. Gym and working on my Dream board are on the agenda on Sunday . Although, if you have read my blog for any amount of time, plans are always subject to change LOL. Well I hope you have a great weekend! Until next time...

P.S. I want to do some updated Progress Pics. They are WAY overdue!

S.H.I.T. and Stuff

Good morning y'all! How are you doing this morning? I am doing pretty darn good. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the feedback yesterday. Some of your comments brought me to tears! Big surprise!!! As a result of that post, I also shared my blog address with two of my childhood friends that were also adopted. They were both helpful and encouraged me with my search and discoveries. Hi Kristina and Christy!

Sure Happy It's Thursday, aren't you? Dave and I had a great dinner last night. He brought home some sirloin steak, which I am not a big fan of but it had a recipe on the package and it appealed to me so I went ahead and tried it. I modified it but basically I made a rub with honey mustard (they suggested Dijon) pepper, garlic, thyme, parsley and oregano. I put it in the toaster oven on Broil for about 20 mins and it came delish! We had it with corn and a green salad. Yummy! I don't have a screen shot for today. The bodybugg software needs updating and I need someone in MIS to do it so I will start posting from my netbook.

I have had some cool NSVs lately that I wanted to share. NSVs are Non Scale Victories. Back in August of 2009 I bought this blouse (1st pic) as an incentive to get into it. I put it in the back of my closet in hopes of getting into it soon. Well, I put it on today and wore it to work!  Pardon the lumpy belly. Luckily the blazer is covering it. I did ditch those jeans on the left. A little too "dated" looking. I have a pair of Seven jeans that I am hoping to fit into someday. I got a really good deal on them. I think I paid $20 when they are regularly $80-$100.

Some other NSVs that have happened. Getting into my car and having to scoot up the seat position because my belly isn't sticking out and hitting it. I have to wear knee-highs/hose for work and the indentation on my legs are a whole lot smaller from having them on all day.  Yesterday, I went to the store to look for some brown pumps and I found and BOUGHT a necklace and earring set OFF the rack! OMG, I think this is one of the 1st times in as long as I can remember that I have been able to do that! I will show you when I wear it, mmmkkkay? Until next time...

P.S. You still have time to enter the Giveaway!
